T he Center for International Legal Studies, in cooperation with law faculties in Eastern Europe and the former republics of the Soviet Union, annually offers short-term teaching appointments to as many as 100 senior lawyers from Common Law countries. A “senior lawyer” has accumulated at least 15 years of significant practice experience in the area in which he or she proposes to lecture. The term of teaching may be from two to six weeks and the length of appointment and dates of teaching are subject to negotiation between the appointee and the host university. The subject areas are not limited, but there is special interest in corporate and business law, intellectual property, litigation, arbitration, and criminal procedure.
All teaching appointments are made through CILS Benefactors, a 501(c)3 corporation registered as a Colorado charity. Thus, reasonable expenses associated with the assignment are tax deductible.
Since 2005, nearly 900 teaching assignments have been completed by the program’s visiting professors in Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Mongolia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovak Republic, and Ukraine, as well as Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
Your opportunity . . . to teach, to impact the lives of young people in distant countries, to share the values of your own legal system and, most importantly, to learn.
